There is a Chinese proverb that says “Every smile makes you a day younger.” It’s true that a warm smile can lift our faces as well as the spirits of those on the receiving end. But over time, our teeth tend to lose their luster, becoming dull and yellow. In addition to natural aging, those cups of coffee and tea, as well as glasses of red wine, take a toll on our teeth, leaving our smiles dingy instead of dazzling.

In addition to the age and those tasty beverages mentioned above, the following things may be discoloring your teeth:

◗ Smoking/tobacco

◗ Too much citrus

◗ Too many spices with vivid color

◗ Mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride

◗ Antihistamines

◗ High blood pressure medication

◗ Excessive fluoride

◗ Trauma to the tooth

◗ Genetics

The desire for a bright, white smile has spawned a variety of products on the market. Dentists offer laser or LED treatments and trays with whitening gels, which deliver dramatic results, but can result in tooth pain and  sensitivity, as well as irritation to the gums. In the drugstores, there are aisles of toothpastes, strips, and mouthwashes that offer a temporary fix, but are less effective. What to do? We went in search of natural home remedies that will restore our youthful grins without the side effects.Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 2.28.40 PM
