The latest trend in hair-care, no (sham)poo, has everyone in a lather… to lose the lather. These purists cut out not only harmful shampoos but all sudsy salves entirely. Instead, they let the scalp regulate its own oil production and use a vinegar/water solution to fight bacteria. Benefits include:

After a transition period (that varies in length for everyone) where you’ll have, well, a little too much sheen, your hair is re-trained not to overproduce the oils it used to need thanks to those stripping chemical products.

Think commercial-ready hair that begs to be tossed and only needs to be washed once a week! Again, results vary by individual, so you can customize your wash schedule to suit your scalp.

Most shampoo formulas contain a laundry list of chemicals, some of them quite toxic. The holistic solution of apple cider vinegar and water is simple and worry-free.

how to “no ‘poo”

This is an exercise in trial-and-error; no two people have the same hair, so no two will no ‘poo the same way! Our test run went like this:

We gradually phased out shampoo by adding more space between the days we washed. While some people go a full week, we found that it was best to leave four days between washes, then clean hair on the fifth day.

To clean, we made a mixture of one part apple cider vinegar to ten parts filtered water, which is massaged into the hair and scalp, then rinsed off.

If that just doesn’t suit your ‘do, substitute an organic shampoo for the vinegar solution. We like Mindful Minerals Mind Your Hair Body Building Shampoo, which is made of dead sea mud and can be used on the whole body.

Conditioning is optional. For a natural remedy, we applied aloe vera juice (available at the drugstore) in the shower, left it on for five minutes, then rinsed it off.

Overall, we were happy with the results and amazed at how the body self-regulates when we take chemicals out of the picture. Try it for yourself to find your individual formula for healthier hair.

switch up your style

Not every occasion calls for stick straight strands or big, bouncy curls. Go for something quick and casual – a classic high ponytail or bun with an elegant sheen.

Start with moist hair and use a brush to smooth back your strands.

Rub a few drops of Josie Maran Pure Argan Oil between your palms, and pat onto your hair. $48; Sephora

Brush hair back into a ponytail or bun and tie it up tightly as high as desired. Spray hair with Moroccan Oil Luminous Hairspray in Medium. Spritz a little on palms and pat over areas that are prone to fly-aways. $23;

Keep this style tightly bound for at least 30 minutes to set, then loosen the hair band a little for comfort.
