Designer Toni Matičevski is a huge star of the fashion world Down Under. His sixteen-year-old label is making global news, sought after by fashion-forward women in Europe and the U.S., as well. The native Australian has gained great acclaim with his sculptural, yet feminine creations, winning Best New Designer at the L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival in 2002, and Prix de Marie Claire Best New Designer in 2005. With his head-turning designs, it’s no surprise that celebs like Kim Kardashian, Leighton Meester, Lily Collins, and Solange Knowles have all strutted the red carpet wearing his works of art.
Born to Macedonian immigrant parents and raised in a suburb of Melbourne, Toni Matičevski was a top student at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), studying fashion design and earning first class honors. Upon graduation, he landed a job with Donna Karan and moved to New York, although he didn’t stay long. Paris was calling. There, Matičevski worked at Cerruti womenswear for two seasons before returning to Melbourne, drawn home to explore his own creative vision. Once back in Australia, he continued to hone his design philosophy, launching his namesake label in 1999.
His early years consisted of limited-edition runs, experimenting with innovative cut, silhouette, and drape. Before long, he was designing a full collection every season. Matičevski now focuses primarily on his ready-to-wear line, known for his use of beautiful fabrics, quality finishing, and subtle details.
