An unassuming white strapless dress is taken into the twenty-first century with winged details framing the bust and an irreverently asymmetric hem.

Trendsetting is nothing new to designer Wang Tao. Her determination and out-of-the-box thinking launched her to the stratosphere of the Chinese fashion industry. Now at the end  of a twenty-year trajectory, most recently as the head designer of wildly successful brand broadcast: bo and board member of Shanghai Ribo Fashion Group, Wang has started her namesake line, Taoray Wang.

Before becoming a pioneer of the budding international fashion scene in her native China, the young designer with a degree in history took off for Tokyo’s top fashion design college, Mode Gakuen, where she was awarded five international awards. After graduation, leading Japanese designer Junko Koshino selected the star student for his staff and later made her senior designer. Wang also spent time in London learning European tastes and techniques, which she deftly weaves into her own body of experience in Asia. Upon her return to her homeland as Creative Director for broadcast: bo in 2002, she used her global training and business acumen to grow the popular brand to over 800 stores across mainland China.

Fearless as ever, Wang began her eponymous endeavor in 2014 at the helm of three teams – a headquarters in Shanghai, China; a studio in  Hyde Park, London; and high-end garment factories in Florence, Italy. Her lines include daily wear, casual wear, and occasion wear, as well  as shoes and handbags. Seasonal couture collections will be released at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week  and displayed in a new Manhattan showroom to be opened within the coming year.

The Taoray Wang debut collection for Spring/Summer 2015 draws on the designer’s entrepreneurial strength, as well as artistic inspiration from the ballet and movie Black Swan. The resulting simplicity and refinement were well received by New York fashion critics and fans who gushed over the masterful use of color contrast and clean lines. Feminine, confident, and focused, the designs seem to echo traits of  Taoroy Wang herself.
