We sat down with attorney and former professional athlete, Jamie Ebling, to dig a little deeper into the exciting life of this single dad of three.

Jamie-EblingFlorida Suncoast native Jamie Ebling first made a name for himself as a professional baseball player for the Tampa Bay Rays: “It was a brotherhood. I have always been competitive and thrived on being the hero.”

Jamie enjoyed playing baseball, but quickly realized that the demanding schedule and frequent travel prevented him from being the father he wanted to be. He was a young man, only thirty, but had a wife and baby at home to consider. So, with his family’s best interest in mind, Jamie decided to pursue another passion – law. Jamie earned his law degree and eventually brought his family back to Sarasota where he started a new career. Now, Jamie is an attorney with Berlin Patten Ebling where he became a named partner earlier this year. His practice focuses on real estate law, representing banks in their real estate transactions.

Jamie’s three children, ages 11, 6, and 5, come first: “All my kids are different. I love the uniqueness of each.” He enjoys spending time with them outdoors, like going to the beach and biking. He is even coaching his son’s soccer team this year. Life in the Ebling household wasn’t always so carefree, though.

When Jamie’s oldest daughter was only four she was diagnosed with Leukemia – right after he and his wife had decided to divorce. Jamie says this dark time in his life has made him a stronger man today.

Jamie doesn’t take life for granted and loves a good adventure. He and his friends recently climbed Mount Kilimanjaro: “My buddies, Jesse Biter and Evan Berlin, and I were having a few drinks one night when the conversation about ‘our next adventure’ came up and within minutes Jesse was booking the tickets and securing meetings with Ryan and Malaka Hilton from Admiral Travel. Over the next few months we trained three to four days a week climbing, hiking, and weight training. We became very familiar with the stair towers at Rivo and Marina Tower. The experience was unbelievable. The toughest part was the altitude.”

Motivated by the bonding experience, the irrepressible crew is already planning their next adventure, and Mount McKinley in Alaska is on the table. When he can’t be on a mountain, Jamie boxes and runs to stay in shape, and watches what he eats. He also enjoys skiing at popular destinations like Telluride, Aspen, or Vail whenever he gets the chance.

On the weekends Jamie likes to play golf and attend sporting events. In the evenings, he might grab a drink with friends at Café Epicure after having dinner at Hyde Park Steakhouse, or possibly go out with his clients.

When it comes to dating he says, “My focus right now is my business and my kids’ well-being. It would be a bonus if I found a relationship.” Jamie goes for an intelligent woman with a good sense of humor. He isn’t just looking for some trophy wife – he values personality over appearance. “Looks are kind of the first thing to grab you,” reflects Ebling, “but I think personality is what keeps you.” He likes to take his time to get to know a girl. “I’m more of a soft-sell,” he says. If he meets someone he’s interested in, he would likely get to know her as a friend before pursuing a romantic relationship. Although, if Jamie is interested in you, he will let you know. “I’m not shy,” Jamie asserts. “I have no problem going up and saying ‘hi’ to somebody if I think they’re attractive or there’s a connection.”

When asked what advice he had for his daughters about dating, he said, “Finish college, have a career, and just travel and enjoy life before you settle down and start a family. You avoid missing aspects of your life when you do it that way. I didn’t have the luxury of doing that. I went from high school to college to baseball to marriage to work. There was no time for play or to figure out who I was. I think it’s important for them to figure out who they are before they commit to somebody else.”

In the future, Jamie looks forward to finding someone to join his adventures if the right woman comes along, but is content in the meantime. At the end of the day all he really wants in a partner is trust, acceptance, and an adventurous spirit.
