Even if you’re meticulous about everyday maintenance, sometimes your hair just needs a little extra help! This is especially true if you treat your hair with heat, chemicals, color, and in the summer, when seasonal activities can be pretty rough on your coif. Swimming in the ocean or in a chlorinated pool will dry out your hair and may even leave it brittle and discolored. The extra sun and heat isn’t a picnic either, and the natural side effect of hot weather – more sweating – just makes matters worse.
You could shell out for a deep conditioning treatment at the closest salon, but those chemical formulas won’t provide the natural nutrients your hair is craving. With this easy mask, your hair will soak up light natural oils which are very similar to the kind our bodies naturally produce, and it’s full of vitamin E, which is crucial to developing healthy proteins (like what your hair is made of!).
- 1 medium- to large-sized ripe organic avocado
- 2 tablespoons organic extra virgin olive oil*
- 1 organic, free-range egg yolk (if desired)
*If your hair has been color treated or received a chemical treatment of any kind, you may want to substitute jojoba or sweet almond oil for the olive oil. Olive oil may strip the color out of your hair, but jojoba and sweet almond are gentler alternatives.
In a medium bowl, mash avocado and whisk together with oil and optional egg yolk. You want the whole mixture to get to a smooth, creamy consistency, like bottled hair conditioner.
Once you reach the desired texture, apply the mixture to clean damp hair, starting at the ends and working up toward your scalp. Gather your hair underneath a shower cap and let rest for 15-20 minutes. If you have a hair dryer, you can turn it onto a low heat setting and focus it on your head for about a minute – the heat will encourage more of the moisturizing compounds to soak into your hair!
After 15-20 minutes, remove the shower cap and rinse your hair thoroughly. Use your normal shampoo and conditioner (you should only need to condition the ends of your hair) and rinse one more time. You can repeat this treatment once every two weeks.
