When you have a well-made drink, it’s art in a glass. We wanted to learn the secret of creating the cleverly crafted cocktails from New York’s best watering holes. And by that we mean exclusive boutique bars with master mixologists.

Every night at six o’clock, this modernized speakeasy opens on New York’s Lower East Side. Death & Company is consistently ranked as one of the top ten bars in the world. If you can’t get there for the full experience, they offer two solutions: a “Cocktails at Home” recipe section on their website and their new book, Death & Co. Modern Classic Cocktails.

With over 500 recipes, beautiful photography, and illustrated charts and graphics, it’s more of a cocktail resource manual than a recipe book.

Start sampling with this beauty:

Elder Fashion

  • 2 ounces of Plymouth gin
  • 1/2 ounce St. Germaine
  • 2 dashes orange bitters (in-house recipe available in their book!)
  • 1 grapefruit twist

Stir all ingredients over ice. Strain into a double rocks glass over one large ice cube. Garnish with grapefruit twist.

With candlelit seating and sprawling views of both Manhattan’s Central Park and the city skyline, Stone Rose Lounge is the place to go for classic elegance. They serve an expansive selection of spirits, including over forty 100% blue agave tequilas. The drink menu offers creative cocktails with fresh ingredients, including our favorite, The Girl Next Door, which shakes up to a beautiful and vibrant FEMME ROUGE red.

The Girl Next Door

  • Muddle 5 mint leaves and 3 blackberries
  • 1 1/2 ounces Kanon Vodka
  • 3/4 ounce Byrhh (substitute with Dubonnet Red if unavailable.)
  • 3/4 ounce lemon juice
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup

Shake. Double strain. Pour into a highball over crushed ice or on the rocks, if crushed ice isn’t available. Top with soda float. Garnish with mint sprig and skewered blackberry.

Tucked away on a quiet, cobbled street in SoHo, the Crosby Street Hotel is the only Firmdale Hotel outside of London. Their claim to fame is their uncompromisingly high standard for excellence and the breathtaking decor by award-winning designer Kit Kemp – who also happens to own the hotels with her husband Tim. Their Peppers & Peach Cocktail is just the thing when you’re feeling sweet and spicy.

Peppers & Peach

  • 2 ounces Reposado Tequila (Herradura or Don Julio never disappoint; choose Cabo Wabo for value.)
  • Peach nectar
  • Splash of lime juice
  • Muddled jalepeño to taste

Mix all ingredients. Pour over ice. Garnish with slice of red Serrano pepper and a slice of lime.

At Analogue, records are played over a vintage, hi-fi set up, with a 1960s tube-amplified record player as a centerpiece. Though it has a decidedly classic look, it creates the vibe owners Jesse Wilson and Jared Gordon imagined: an escape from the digital world in the heart of the Village. Expect quality drinks and eats here without formality. Open only three years, it’s garnering a lot of attention as the new kid on the block, due in part to drinks like the pretty–and delicious–one listed here.

  • 2 ounces Reposado Tequila
  • 3/4 ounce Ruby Port Wine
  • 1/2 ounce spicy agave nectar*
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 4 red grapes to muddle
  • Himalayan pink salt to rim glass

In a shaker, muddle the grapes. Add all ingredients and ice. Shake vigorously for 8-10 seconds. Double strain into a salted rim coupe cocktail glass.

*Spicy Agave Nectar

  • 2 ounces of agave nectar
  • 3 dashes of Tabasco sauce
  • 2 slices of chipotle jalapeño

Mix well. Store at room temperature.

FEMME ROUGE is based in Sarasota, FL, so for those who want to sample the local talent, we recommend Jack Dusty.

If you would rather celebrate by being seated and served, look no further than Jack Dusty at the Ritz Carlton. With its lounge ambiance and beautiful view of the water, Jack Dusty allows you to escape to a trendy hotspot without leaving the paradise of Sarasota. Trust the bartender, Ingi Sigurdsson, to create delicious signature drinks, like the Bedlam, which uses Jack Dusty’s house-made Grenadine.

  • 2 ounces Milagro Silver Tequila
  • 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 3/4 ounce house-made Grenadine
  • (Equal parts pomegranate juice and sugar, stirred without heat until the sugar is dissolved.)
  • 3 dashes Vilya Spirits Superior
  • Absinthe Verte

Shake all ingredients and pour into a double rocks glass. Garnish with grapefruit peel expressed and placed into glass.
